GRATITUDE - June 2, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE BACK WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY CANCER EXPERIENCE TO OTHERS FOLLOWING BEHIND.

...excerpts from email to wife (caregiver) of new member of my Tonsil Cancer 'club' on-line forum.  Her question to me was how to deal with peoples negative chatter from their social group and how to keep her husband's attitude positive.

"....as the guardian of attitude...please tell friends (?) etc. rather bluntly, that only positive, upbeat thoughts are allowed...I'm sure they mean well, but until you are in it - you don't get it...like childless people telling you how to be a parent.

Suggestion:

Have your husband carry his top ten positive affirmations, written down, with him and review every spare moment when doubts creep in.  Post-It -notes with cool upbeat thoughts on bathroom mirror, etc.  Sounds silly, but pretty soon the roses will crowd out the weeds.  Works really well for me...have a glass of wine and write down all the things you two have to be grateful for (get a legal pad - there is a lot).  Writing it down reinforces it and subliminally adds $$ to the positive-thought bank account.

Note:  If one averages the life expectancy of five 80-year old smoking alcoholics with tonsil cancer and the life expectancy of five 30-40 year old healthy tonsil victims...you will always get something less than 100%...forget the averages...he is in the right category.  He will be fine" .
