GRATITUDE - May 12, 2012

I have four wonderful children, I love them all and am extremely grateful for the pleasure of being their father.  Each gets their turn in my blogs.  Today, it is Ian's turn.

All parents could go on forever about each of their children and how special they are...a rational and unbiased opinion for sure.

Ian and I have a special relationship (as we do with each of our children)...there are some common areas with all your children and then there are the parts you share with only one person.  I have three sons.  Ian has three sons.  I didn't have a lot of money when I was raising my boys.  Ian doesn't have a ton of money at this point in his young life...He calls me pretty much every week to 'just talk'.  I love it.  The time taken is worth more than gold.

We talk "guy stuff".  We talk about the mysteries of the universe when it comes to relationships and the inhabitants of Venus.  We talk about being fathers.  He tells me what my grandsons are doing or not doing and I, in humorous return,  share the version I lived 25 years ago, when he and his brothers pretty much did the same.  He knows he is getting "old" when he hears my words from his childhood come out of his mouth with his sons and he now "gets it" with the sage, fatherly advice he dutifully ignored 20+ years ago...and I laugh...I lived long enough to see him finally understand why parents do that crazy stuff.

We never solve anything.  Universal mysteries are destined to be just that. We always end the conversation with "I love you".  It doesn't get any better than that.  A bond is made, however, and I will forever be thankful.  I am a rich man.
