GRATITUDE - December 28, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE FUN OF PLAYING LIVE MUSIC AND THE CAPABILITY OF RECORDING SAME.



 End of the year approaching and this blog will come to a close in 4 days...three more blogs to go.  I will always remain grateful for the multitude of small 'things' that have the possibility of creating joy within us that we have the opportunity to experience in our daily lives.  As a collector of 'quotes', one of my favoites addresses this issue:  "Remember that the best 'things' in life are not 'things' at all."

The joy of overcoming self-doubt about my ability to take up the bass guitar and learn to play my favorite songs after the age of 60, the brief foray (an initial attempt - especially outside your usual areas of competence;  as in "scientists' forays into politics",
the rock-star look with graying pony-tail, and the ability to leave behind a visual legacy for my children and children's children...barring the demise of the Internet.

GRATITUDE - November 25, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR TECHNOLOGY AND A BEAUTIFUL FALL SUNDAY.

Lise and I went back to the see the other part of the quite large Norman Rockwell exhibit at the Crocker Museum this morning and I just had to take more pics of the view from the 'rocking chair room'...antique oak and leather rockers in front of a big window wall overlooking a park...tried out a new ap on my Android - FX Camera - pretty cool...have no idea how I will use it, but a cool ap nonetheless.



If I wan't at the museum, I could have been practicing my bass licks.  Someone sent me this great electric bass video as inspiration...the downside is that it is a machine...tech engineering student made as a class project...perhaps if the winter rains kick in and I can't go out, I can focus on improving my bass skills...this might be a bit tough though.

Grateful to enjoy a beautiful day with no stress and no drama.

GRATITUDE - November 7, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR PROGRESSING TO THE POINT WHERE I CAN DEVELOP SOME OF MY OWN SONGS.

Here is sample studio cut of a song I am working on.  I am finishing up with the lyrics and placement of the solos (guitar and bass) so, if I can get the walk and chew gum thing down, I hope to be singing on the next version of this one.

GRATITUDE - July 14, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR MY FIRST GIFT FROM RETIREMENT.

Whereas, there will hopefully be many more gifts to come, my first gift popped up yesterday.  I have only been retired for two weeks (actually 4 days counting from first day back from week-long road-trip that had been a scheduled vacation for a year) and yesterday I had no idea what day of the week it was...if I didn't do this blog every day, I wouldn't know even what the date is...I am thinking we are probably still in 2012.


No more "hump-day".


No more "TGIF".


No more "Damn, have to go back to work tomorrow".


It is that feeling you have on the first day of a long vacation......except it is every day.


Way back in the day [35 years ago], I sold a business I had and took a year off to travel Europe.  It is like that, except better, as I knew then, there would eventually be an end to the travel, as well as to the money and I did not delude myself into thinking it was 'forever'.  


Not so, now.  Don't have to work, can if I want to, but why??????????

Dropped Sarah off at friend's house for a swim party today...the Dad is new Guitar player looking for Bassist to jamb with -Q: "What days are you available to practice"?  A: "Any".  .. sending my 'play list' via email tonight...could be a new beginning....could this be gift number 2?

GRATITUDE - April 12, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE GIFT OF OMENS IN MY LIFE.


Anyone reading any of my blogs and posts would know I have a relatively new found appreciation of music in my life.  Suffice to say, the experience of finally learning to play bass at age  62+ is a gift in my life.  I may have also mentioned in previous posts that my wife plays violin.  

She plays Mendelssohn, I play Clapton.  There has been a recent odd planet alignment that occasionally puts us in front of the same mic at the same time.  We will soon debut a public version of "House of the Rising Sun" that is outstanding.  Posting rough draft of first rehearsal.


Fast forward to last week.  Lise and I had an opportunity to have a week to ourselves sans kids, as our daughter was on a week-long school trip to Washington D.C.  We are touristing (that is a word, right?) around in Santa Fe, NM and stumble upon the main square with artists, jewelry, etc. with a street faire atmosphere looking for silver jewelry pony-tail hair ties for my new urban-hip look.


Then I heard it.  Music.  Live.  Crossed the square and there, performing live on the square was 2/3 of a local band, 'Urban Art'.  Electric bass (Endre') and violin (Michael).  I have always been a believer in omens.  This was one.  A great sound and very cool interpretations of songs from Pachabel (Canon in D) to 'The Police' (Every Breath You Take).  Mendelssohn meets Clapton.  

Bought their home produced CD, out of the basket, on the spot.  No hesitation.  Awesome.  I could have spent the rest of my vacation catching their daily gig at the park.  Another blogger [accolades to DigitalSeagull] caught them and herself playing violin with them, on tape, live, two days before I was there in the same spot, listening to the same music.

My weekly guitar lessons tonight.  Learned  'Every Breath You Take'.  Bass and Violin...I plan to do a humble version with Bass, violin, guitar, keyboards and sax. New song to learn off the 'Urban Art' album each week, for the next 18 weeks.


Life is good.  My music soul is restored.  I am thankful for the Music Omen in Santa Fe.
