GRATITUDE - October 10, 2012

I AM, ONCE AGAIN, GRATEFUL FOR MY SIGHT.

Just got back from the ophthalmologist for my regular treatment for Galucoma.  Interesting note:  I have been going to the eye doctor[s] for about 50 years.  In the last 20 years I have had to switch to tri-focals to get it right; up close and far away.  Taking my standard 'read the third line please' eye test to check my general vision, for the first time, the tech said "Are you looking through the top part of your glasses?"  That is the section for distance.

Amazing.

So simple, but what a difference.  I had not realized it, nor had anyone said anything about it, but miraclously, I could read all the lines.

Funny.  Little things we take for granted.

So much beauty and cool things oin this planet to see.  The gift of sight is very special.

GRATITUDE - September 27, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE SIZE OF MY HEART.

Although it doesn't always beat so regularly, it is large enough to hold a magnificent amount of Gratitude.  Family, friends, renewed experiences....all after my doctor's help send my life into overtime.  There is so much I am grateful for, I should write a blog...oh wait, I am.

could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude."

GRATITUDE - September 26, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR FINDING ANOTHER GRATEFUL WELTON.

After putting 'gratitude blog Welton' into the Google search engine...I found I was number two on the search list....lo and behold, the result ahead of mine is a gratitude blog from a Kathleen Welton.  How cool is that?  Here is her blog for today.  I am a fan.

Gratitude is the best attitude.

–Author Unknown

The end of summer always reminds me of the importance to plan for something new. For the remainder of this year, I plan to focus as much as I can on practicing gratitude each and every day.

I have become proficient at practicing gratitude on certain days of the year and certain times during the week or month.  In this book, Living in Gratitude there are a multitude of ways to be aware of how to be grateful on a daily basis.   I highly recommend this excellent book and the wonderful quotes, stories, and practical advice that the author shares to expand the worlds of work, relationships, health, and finances.

September 19 is National Gratitude Day. September 21 is World Gratitude Day.  November 22 is Thanksgiving.  Why wait for one of these days to express thanks?  There is lots of information on the Web to research in order to create your own gratitude celebration. The research shows that gratitude is good for you.

So, I have decided not to wait for just one day to celebrate.  Instead, I have decided to celebrate each and every day for the rest of this year.  To help me with my plan, I will donate $128 between now and the end of the year to a happy cause.  A total of 1$ each day–in memory of the little horse that makes me smile (see my “just for the hay of it”post last month.). Because it is important to remember each day that gratitude is the best attitude.

Enjoy the journey,

Kathleen Welton

GRATITUDE - September 25, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE EXPERIENCE OF KAYAKING IN ALASKA.

Peaceful, serene, cold, beautiful, awesome.  Lise and I joined about a dozen others from our cruise ship to spend a few hours kayaking around a secluded bay just out of Ketchikan, Alaska.  See About Me photo to the left.

Wonderful experience.

Although we saw whales on the trip we are glad we weren't with this guy. Whale came up under him with mouth open in a school of small fish. (he made it through) Paddle faster!.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE CHANCE TO FLY TO MARS.

How cool is technology?  This is, for sure, the closest I will get and AS I have a severe aversion to heights anyway, - actually, it is close enough.  Enjoy!

GRATITUDE - September 22, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY LIVE MUSIC WITH MY  WIFE.

Live music showcase today at the Natomas Racquet Club.  Me on bass and Lise on violin and my teacher on guitar.  Played 'House of the Rising Sun', 'Unchained Melody', and 'The Thrill is Gone'....was a gas, well received and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.  We were good.

More later.

GRATITUDE - September 21, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR ACHING MUSCLES IN BOTH MY LEGS.

Sounds odd, eh.  In my endeavor (sidebar: final flight of the the Space Shuttle Endeavor on top of a jumbo 747 on its way into history happening over Sacramento, as I write this) to open up my mind to all that I have to be grateful for.  I continually find examples of the simplest things we all take for granted.

I am grateful for the opportunity, time and financial means to join a gym and can go as often as I like.  My trainer is working on a program to strengthen my legs and especially a "bad" right knee I have operated on for torn cartilage when I was 28.

As a result of my recent exercises, my leg muscles are so sore, one would be ordinarily inclined to complain.

Until I saw these:

One-legged soccer player scores goal

One-legged wrestler wins match

Be grateful for what you have, even when it hurts.

Note: Birthday today for Stephen King and Bill Murray

Tomorrow starts the last 100 days of 2012 - how will you finish the year?

I AM GRATEFUL FOR NOT BEING TOO OLD TO BE A ROCK STAR.

Lise and her violin will join me on bass for three songs at my music studio showcase event this Saturday.  Am looking forward to it.  This is what I imagined as a goal when I first started playing.  Hopefully  YouTube videos will follow next week.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE WITNESS OF COURAGE, DETERMINATION AND POSITIVE THINKING ALL AROUND US.

I can't fathom any reason to feel sorry for myself in any of my life experiences when surrounded by this kind of courage, positive thinking and determination.

GRATITUDE - September 9, 2011

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THREE HANDSOME GRANDSONS.

Four years ago , coming out of radiation and chemo treatments, I wasn't so sure I would still be here on September 9, 2012.  My good fortune to still be here is overflowing.

For the ultimate surprise birthday gift, Jen, Ian, and my three grandsons (Zak/5, Kyan/3, and Linkin/6 mo) showed up on my doorstep following a two-day drive from Idaho.  How cool was that?

Very handsome young men all and thanks to Jen, we now have three very good looking Welton men  in the game.  It was a great treat to have my 5 year old grandson knock on the door and then have everybody else pop around the corner.

I very much appreciate the gift of time I have been given by my team of Cancer doctors and had it not been for them, mixed with good fortune, I would not have been answering that door.

Much to be thankful for.

How can you go wrong with this BeeGee's classic danced by Rita Hayworth, Fred Astaire and others from 40+ years ago?  Just got to smile and tap your foot and be thankful that you are alive.

GRATITUDE - September 7, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR MY TRIFOCALS ADJUSTED FOR 20/1250 EYESIGHT.

The gift of sight.  Add advancing glaucoma and I am still grateful.  There has never been any whining about not being able to get my pilot's license or blah, blah, blah.

There are so many visual gifts available to me with the lens corrections and meds currently available.

That glass is practically brimming with good fortune.  How would your life change if you lost your sight?  Would the quality go up or down?

Check out this video and count yourself lucky.  What have you done today with the gifts given you?

GRATITUDE - Sept 6, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR GETTING TO BE A GREAT UNCLE.

Grant Chiles Beardsley
My niece, Erica, just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, named Grant.  A wonderful touch is the middle name of Chiles, my mom's maiden name.  Healthy and loved, we welcome him into this wonderful world, made just a bit more special, because of him.

GRATITUDE - September 5, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE ORDINARY SKILLS I HAVE WITHOUT MAJOR LIMITATIONS.

We have just finished watching the Olympics and some amazing feats of skill derived from years of training and perseverance by some talented and very gifted athletes.

But, what if you were born with a major handicap? What if you were in a major accident?

Is your life diminished?

The 2012 Paralympics were also just held in London.  These are the true athletes that overcame serious disabilities to achieve greatness.

TRUE ATHLETES

AMAZING SKILL

UNSTOPPABLE

BE GRATEFUL FOR WHAT WE HAVE.  What have we done with much more than these special Olympians?

GRATITUDE - August 24, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR MY VERSION OF HEALTH AND PEACE OF MIND.

We don't think about it much, but extremely poor health, that is often not survivable, is rampant in many parts of the world.  Not in my neighborhood, but there all the same.  I am thankful to be born in the United States, with college opportunities with good and bad role models to guide me.  I haven't been to war, nor have I spent any time in prison.  Both of these are commonplace for families that just happen to live in the wrong place and the wrong time.  Much to be thankful for, when we open your eyes just a bit wider.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR BEING THERE TO HELP MY YOUNG CHILDREN WHEN THEY NEEDED IT.

Most parents are willing to help their young children as they go through the learning exercises necessary to make it in the real world.  Here is a touching example of that inherent love.

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE LUCK OF A GOOD GARDEN THIS YEAR.

Got started late, but finally am reaping the bounty of our garden.   For some reason I have 3 tomato plants and 476 squash plants...all-inter-marrying between acorn squash, yellow squash and acorn squash...makes for some interesting progeny.

GRATITUDE - August 15, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR PERSEVERANCE.

We all must have characteristics that we like and some we con't care for so much.  I would have to say that a strong point in my favor is perseverance.  Have had my fair share of tribulations and going through Cancer treatment - chemo and radiation - is the experience I disliked the most.  There were moments when I didn't think I could continue on one more day.

But I did, to my benefit.

There is so much more to my life now, having not only survived the experience, but hopefully learned a bit more about my character in the process

"Never, Ever, Ever Give Up". - Winston Churchill

“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”   -  Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

Sometimes lessons in bravery and perseverance arrive on four legs -- sometimes on two. A pit bull puppy named London taught himself to walk on only his hind legs after an accident deprived him of his front two. His caretaker in Vancouver, Wash. said she could tell the pooch knew a “different journey” awaited him, adapted to his loss and took renewed joy in everyday pleasures. “He gets around by scooting his body using his hind legs, and if he needs to steady himself he uses his face as a frontal tripod support,” she said. “He plays, he’s happy, he enjoys rolling in the grass just as any able-body canine would."

GRATITUDE - August 14, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR RECOGNIZING THAT, ALTHOUGH DIFFICULT, CHANGE IS NECESSARY.

As we traverse the rocky path of life looking for the smooth parts, we often encounter people and situations that seemingly make our life more difficult than we would like.

The common reaction for most is to ask, think, require, demand that the others in this situation change.  Sometimes we are in a position of control and can exact that desired change, but mostly not.  A significant portion of our personal angst is self-created and within our control to change ourselves, if we so desire.

"The only person that has to change is YOU."
 - Marvin John Towler

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference."
…Serenity Prayer
