GRATITUDE - January 14, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE ABILITY TO  STILL GROW HAIR!

I can grow a ponytail.  My work situation does not prevent me from doing so. More importantly, despite the fact that I am getting balder faster in the front, hair continues to grow in the back.  All of this has special meaning due to the fact that I lost all my hair not that long ago to radiation and chemotherapy treatment for Tonsil Cancer.

Yul Brynner
There was a time when I didn't think it would grow back at all...and I was not enamored with the Yul Brynner look.  When it did start growing back, so did the mustache and goatee....and no where else on my face...the full beard look is done...the chemo took it and forgot to return it.

Buffalo Bill Cody
Surprisingly, the mustache and goatee grew back very well, as did the hair on the back of my head. My perceived new-found aging-rocker image is definitely enhanced.  I has become apparent to me that I was most likely channeling Buffalo Bill Cody.  I pretty much accept the fact that it is God's will that this is my new look...he could have given me the Jamaican dreadlocks look...just sayin'...

GRATITUDE - January 13, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR MY ABILITY TO WALK.

I can walk. (thanks to regular visits to the chiropractor after falling down a flight of stairs on my back).

I can get up out of chair and move forward as I like.  I am not an invalid.  I am not  incapable of movement.  i can experience a trek across the magnificence of an Alaskan  glacier.

Such a small thing that goes unnoticed and unappreciated every day of our lives.

GRATITUDE - January 12, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR EVERY DAY THAT IS A GOOD  DAY!

...every day is a good day.

It has been years since I had a bad day.  Oh, I have had my share of bad things happen, but not enough to drown out the good parts of that day.  We do have the choice to accept  what each unique day brings us and apply its lessons (if we can see and be aware of them) to enhance our life.

I am a 64 year old middle class Caucasian male in Northern California, United States of America.
Sunset over Victoria Island harbor.

How can anything that happens to me take away from the fact that I am better off than 90% of the people on the face of the earth, simply by virtue of the status I just stated.

I have a place to live, a car that works, health insurance and hospital facilities at my disposal, a job that provides an adequate source of income, I take vacations regularly, etc.  All my friends and associates have access to  similar gifts.  It would be easy to take all that for granted and not be thankful for all the gifts that are in that basket.  For that opportunity, I am grateful each day.

GRATITUDE - January 11, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS.

This is an excerpt from '8 Ways to Wellness/Tedd Koren':

"Enjoy nourishing relationships.  This is perhaps the most important aspect of life and of health.  The science of psychoneuroimmunology (whew...say that 3 times fast) confirms what common sense tells us: people in healthy relationships are better off.  Those in committed relationships live longer and are healthier.  People that feel disconnected from others are sicker and die younger.  The more connected you are, the happier you are.  Nourish deeper connections to family, friends and co-workers, explore social organizations, clubs and religious meetings.  Anger, fear, loneliness and disconnection weaken your immune system while emotions of gratitude and love are the most healing."

GRATITUDE - January 10, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE TENACITY TO KEEP GETTING UP.

"Fall seven times, get up eight." Japanese Proverb

Success is getting up just one more time that you have fallen or have been knocked down in life.  For those that are old enough to remember, people used to wear timepieces on their wrist (they were called watches) and there was long-running ad for one brand - TIMEX (run over by a car, dropped off a building, a child smashing in on the floor, etc):  "Timex - it takes a licking, but keeps on ticking.  That's me.

I rue the day that I just don't feel like getting up anymore.  I do love the feeling of beating the devil in the hard-knock-life game.  It is not a game you can win forever, but if you can take it into overtime - you win.

I have already won and I am grateful.

GRATITUDE - January 9, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR WHAT I HAVE NOT RECEIVED.

Think about it.  We should, of course be thankful for what we have vs. what we don't have.  That said, there is so much that could have happened to us or given us that would not make us better off....but wait, is that always true?

Who would be disappointed for not receiving the gift of Cancer?  In grateful retrospect, my unasked for turn in those circumstances has made me a better person and certainly one that is more appreciative of what I have.  As we look around the world and see the circumstances given to others, we surely must be grateful we weren't on that list.

Grateful I came into this world in 1940's Oklahoma.  Could have been under far different circumstances.

"For what I have received may the Lord make me truly thankful.  And more truly for what I have not received."  Storm Jameson

GRATITUDE - January 8, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE GIFT OF MUSIC.

In a very special personal way, the gift of music has awarded me something I don't think I would have ever experienced any other way.  After confronted with the big 'C' and deciding to finally learn how to play the bass guitar...many things have changed.  Personal self-confidence is one.  The joy of learning something new and being grateful for the ability to retain what I have learned (up to 20 songs now) certainly has reinforced that I am keeping Alzheimer's demons at bay, for now.

However the best is finally being included in a very select club with my daughter and my wife.  Superb musicians both, I was always on the outside looking in.  Whereas, it is highly likely I won't get into the classical music inner circle, I have successfully crossed over the marker to  does from does not, in making music.

My lovely bride has more than met me half-way on this new experience by voluntarily crossing over to the "dark-side" of our bookends of Mozart and Eric Clapton to join me in my new found rock-n- roll heaven.

Below, is a YouTube link to our first practice session for our band, 'Another Day in Paradise' next performance of House of the Rising Sun/Instrumental with Lise on violin.  Not perfect yet, but damn close for a first rehearsal.

Wow, so much to be thankful for.
