GRATITUDE - August 11, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR A BIT OF TIME ENJOYING WASTING TIME.

I probably have a more focused opinion of time and its importance to me under my medical circumstances.  I have pushed myself to accomplish more in less time for as long as I can remember.  I can't tell you how many times I have been advised to 'just relax'.

So, for the past month (post retirement), I have done mostly just that.  No real agenda, no schedule, no pressure.  I even learned how to let go of the guilt that came along with that.

That said, I will probably ease into a middle ground of daily rule and frequent daily exceptions.  I have many projects to accomplish and "miles to go before I sleep" (thank you Robert Frost).  I am more comfortable with a plan of action, but have embraced the exception of 'unless I don't want to' as an equally valid motivator.

"The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time."

GRATITUDE - August 10, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR AIR CONDITIONING.

You know, we just start to sweat a bit, we walk over to the wall switch on the thermostat...a quick flick - and now we have environmental comfort.  Seems simple and mostly under appreciated.  It doesn't come at a cheap price and many don't use it, because they don't want the bill.

It has been 100 plus for this past week and will keep it up for the immediate future...when it is 70 degrees at 6am, you know it is going to be a long, hot day.

When I was a kid...there was no AC.  Not in the house and not in the car.  I remember my parents having an after-market AC unit installed in the car in the sixties, because it didn't come with one as a standard feature.

When we were little (in Oklahoma...get very warm there in the summer), we had 'swamp' coolers, with straw filter pads and dripping water with a big noisy motor on the fan.  Loved it.  Sixty years later, it is still easier for me to fall asleep at night with a quietly-noisy fan blowing on me.  I recall sleeping on the screened in porch (mosquitoes) at my uncle's house in the summer and the damn crickets and bullfrogs and the dead-still ultra-humid night air making it almost impossible to fall asleep.

9am, hit the AC switch...going to be a long, hot day.

GRATITUDE - August 9, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR NOT PURSUING THE OLYMPICS AS AN ATHLETE.

A bit lighthearted note today regarding the long road to Olympic Gold.  Not every attempt is a success.  Be thankful.

GRATITUDE - August 8, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE BEAUTIFUL CINEMATOGRAPHY OF LOUIS SCHWARTZBERG AND HIS UNIQUE CONNECTION TO THE MIRACLE OF NATURE.

We are so fortunate to have a current overabundance of life-sustaining water.  There are many places on earth where there isn't enough or it is polluted.

Water Crisis:

While the world's population tripled in the 20th century, the use of renewable water resources has grown six-fold. Within the next fifty years, the world population will increase by another 40 to 50 %. This population growth - coupled with industrialization and urbanization - will result in an increasing demand for water and will have serious consequences on the environment.

Already there is more waste water generated and dispersed today than at any other time in the history of our planet: more than one out of six people lack access to safe drinking water, namely 1.1 billion people, and more than two out of six lack adequate sanitation, namely 2.6 billion people. 3900 children die every day from water borne diseases (WHO 2004). One must know that these figures represent only people with very poor conditions. In reality, these figures should be much higher.

I am thankful that I have access to fresh water and to the fortunate parts of the planet where the abundance is an integral part of the beauty of nature.  We should acknowledge thanks everyday for the gifts we have that have nothing to do with the contents of our wallet.

A Moving Art original short film by Louie Schwartzberg. The journey of fresh water from melting snow to streams, waterfalls, and rivers, which is the essence of life.

GRATITUDE - July 7, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR EMBRACING THE MIRACLE OF NATURE.

Every day we are surrounded by millions of unnoticed tiny miracles of nature that, under appreciated and not protected, can lead to the destruction of the environment as we know it.

Like the 12 step program in AA, the first step is admission that we don't take enough responsibility for our impact on the environment and don't comprehend how the smallest of contributions can have great results for our future.

These recent clips I have added to this blog are a reinforcement of the beauty and intelligence of nature.  There are none about concrete or asphalt.  Nature is a living, breathing, ever-changing part of our world. We should all be grateful and ever thankful for the benefits bestowed on us.

GRATITUDE - August 6, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE NATURAL BEAUTY SURROUNDING US.

Often we walk with our head down, texting, lost in thought, preoccupied with events past, present, future and dwell in the work-a-day world necessary to put bread on the table and a roof over our heads.

The miracle of communication and technology brings the beauty that exists around the world to us through our streaming devices.

A hot cup of tea, the cell phone in the other room and 5 minutes and 55 seconds of your time for a fantastic short journey of appreciation of the world we live in and how it must have looked before man walked:

GRATITUDE - August 5, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE TINY PARTS OF NATURE THAT ARE SO SMALL AND UNNOTICEABLE, WE RARELY ACKNOWLEDGE THEM AT ALL.

Can you describe the beauty of pollination?  Tough to do, isn't it?  Without pollination, we wouldn't eat and boundless beauty would be stripped from our lives.

What you are about to watch goes on all around us.

Every Day.

24/7/365

We rarely see it and we most certainly don't think about it.  The beauty is outstanding.  Watch for the baby bat clinging under the mother's wing.  Notice the spiral, up-side down flight of a hummingbird in pursuit of an insect.  Appreciate.
