GRATITUDE - June 21, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR LESSONS LEARNED.

When diagnosed with any kind of Cancer, it is common to envision the water of your life drain from your glass until "half-empty" appears in your view.  As long as there is any water left in your glass of life, we are blessed.  Is it half full or half empty?  We have the power to choose our view.

The key? Stay strong; review ALL the great things in your life.  We all have more than we realize.  Watch every sunrise (you probably can't sleep anyway).  It is a miracle created daily just for you.  Post treatment, you are that new sunrise emerging from darkness.

The extra "belly button" I got after my feeding tube was removed, was my symbol of being born again.  Post Cancer diagnosis, you have a new life. Long or short, we have the power to decide daily to savor the gift that is “life.”  We all have an end to our journey eventually.  When one can see the end of the road, the days increase in value.

When I was younger, it was a given that I was going to never get old and of course, I would surely live forever.  At 64, I am acutely aware that I am at least in the fleeting moments of the third quarter or perhaps fourth quarter of this game of life.  Choose to finish strong, whether it be 100, 1,000, 10,000 days left in the game.

Some of my favorite "motivational reminders" of the value of our days:

·        "Never, Never, Never Give Up" - Winston Churchill

·        “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the one thing I can, and the wisdom to know it's me.”  - a variation

·        "Dream as if you will live forever, live like you will die today.” - James Dean

·        "The bad news is that time flies.  The good news is:  You’re the Pilot.” - Michael Altshuler

·        “We do not choose to be born.  We do not choose our parents, or the country of our birth.  We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time and conditions of our death.  But within this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we live.” - Joseph Epstein

GRATITUDE June 20, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR MOVING FORWARD TO ACHIEVE SOMETHING BETTER.

This recent activity of expressing gratitude on a daily basis has changed my demeanor significantly.  Little things that bugged me are irrelevant now.  I haven't mastered the "don't let yourself get bugged" - turn-the-other-cheek thing yet, but getting better.  There are so many things in our daily lives that we should be grateful for.  It is truly amazing what you can appreciate about your life if you let the gratitude in.

"Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that each step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation."  Brian Tracy

GRATITUDE - June 19, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE TIMING AND ABILITY TO SECURE THE RENTAL PROPERTIES.

It made a world of difference in me relaxing with the idea of walking away from a decent working income into a strange new territory where I don't work and free money comes in the mail.

I heard about this phenomenon in the past, but it always had pyramid network-marketing attached.  This way I don't have to sell soap or air filters or makeup or vitamins to all my family and friends and sit in coffee shops with strangers drawing concentric circles in little pyramid  figures, where at the end of the page it all turns into zeros behind a number, where I don't have to work and the residual money flows in forever...

Well, I did it the old fashioned way and now I have the residual income 'forever'...and my family doesn't have to fear me calling them about an exciting new idea that is going to 'explode' and try to get them to get in 'on the ground floor'...my sister and brother-n-law get it but, all the younger folks just have to grind it out for another 30-40 years, like we did, and exercise smart money management and then they too can get up on stage with their new band or sail off to Aruba or whatever.

GRATITUDE - June 18, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR A CARING DOCTOR & THE U.S. MAIL.

Today's mail brought my award letter from Social Security confirming my payments to start August 22, 2012 (for the month of July...first check is a long wait) and also a letter from my cardiologist with the results of my echocardiogram:

"Dear Mr. Welton.

Your echocardiogram was nearly normal (close enough for me...not like I ever wished to be "normal"), showing some mildly enlarged chambers, but still normal pumping function, normal pressures, and normal valves.  Good News!

Sincerely A. McDuff Sheehy, MD (cool name, don't you think?)."

Hooray for 'normal'.

GRATITUDE - June 17, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR BEING A DAD.

I have had the ultimate good fortune to have four children.  Three great sons and three wonderful grandsons.  Boys are easy.  I'm one.  I know how they work.

My 13-going-on-21 daughter is a conundrum.  A teen girl must be the most complex puzzle I have been confronted with yet.

I am down with my sons.... they all checked in with me with Father's Day wishes and Nick is coming for BBQ dinner tonight.  "Hey old Man - What's up" and we are good.  They all have their own lives now and are scattered to the winds.

My still-at-home teen daughter has not spoken but a few words to me all week, those dripping in sarcasm with the obvious frustration of having to deal with a way-out-of-touch, senile, old-balding-deaf-man is mostly too much for her to take.  Barely tolerable at home - sheer torture in public.

Today, my wife and daughter went into Old Sacramento for lunch at a nice restaurant and I am buying...so that part was bearable (plus some slight coercion from her Mom was in there also, I'm sure)... I got a beautiful card from her with the reminder that it is the kind of card that folds into a pyramid, so you can stand it up on your desk for the world to see.

But, the gift was on the walk back to the car.  100+ degrees, a bit of an incline, so I am puffing like the little-engine-that-could. She came up from behind me and held my hand. In public.  No words.  Didn't have to.  Yet another perfect day to be grateful for.

Happy Father's Day to All.

GRATITUDE - June 16, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR AN EXTRA HOUR'S SLEEP LAST NIGHT.

Recent days have seen me up very early.  I awake at 3am and I am wide awake, so I just get up.  I have been averaging about three hours sleep each night for the past week. It is sometimes said, as you age you don't need as much sleep

Last night I brought my zero gravity chair upstairs and put it next to the open window and turned on the whole house fan.  Got an extra hour.  Got up at 4:30a instead of 3:30a.

I have a tendency to go to bed around midnight or 1 am anyway.  I do take naps here and there, but not necessarily every day.  I have been taking new meds, so perhaps my body hasn't kicked in with accepting them yet.

It is probably like the kid that can't sleep on Christmas eve or the night before the trip to Disneyland...my big Retirement day is twelve days away - maybe I can finally get some sleep then...ha.

GRATITUDE - June 15, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR EVERY LITTLE BIT OF GOOD NEWS.

Mr. Welton,

The BNP is somewhat elevated, but actually at that level it does not indicate significant heart failure. People with real heart failure frequently have BNPs in the thousands. Your BNP of 269 indicates some mild strain on the heart, presumably from atrial fibrillation with a fast pulse rate, but nothing surprising or concerning. I recommend continuing our current treatment aimed at lowering atrial fibrillation rate and trying to convert you back to normal sinus rhythm with a cardioversion procedure.

Sincerely,
Macduff Sheehy, M.D.
