GRATITUDE - October 14, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR INDOOR PLUMBING.

When I was a kid, we visited my Uncle Johnny in the Ozark Mountains in eastern Arkansas.  No plumbing.  Outhouse with spiders, splinters and stink (oh my).  Pump handle for water in the kitchen.

When I stayed with a family in Negril, Jamaica in the mid - 70's, the toilet was also outside, but 40 feet away in the jungle with three walls (yes, 3 not 4) and no roof and a 50 gallon drum of water and a half coconut shell to add water to flush the toilet.

When I traveled in France in the late 70's, it was not unusual to find a hole in the floor and no toilet and two bricks to stand on, so when you pulled the flush handle, your shoes wouldn't get wet.

**
The United Nations Human Development Report (2006) estimated that 2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation. In other words, forty (40) percent of the people on this planet have no indoor plumbing.
When I traveled to Mexico in the early 70's, the main marketplace in Mazatlan (Grande Mercado) had one set of toilets on the second level but you had to buy paper from the attendant upon entering (what a monopoly) and all he had left was slick magazine pages ripped into squares.

In the 90's I visited a very nice private cabin on Lake Tahoe, where we had to burn the used toilet paper in a can.

One can take the simplest conveniences for granted, until you don't have it anymore.

Checkout these bathrooms to pine after:

GRATITUDE - October 13, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE BEAUTY CREATED BY  POLLINATION IN NATURE AND THE TECHNOLOGY TO CAPTURE IT.

Not much more be said.

Watch this marvelous ode to pollination.  Pretty amazing.  I am thankful that I live in a time where this phenomenon is captured by technology that is greater than what can be viewed normally by the human eye.

GRATITUDE - October 12, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR MY SON, NICHOLAS GERALD WELTON.

Twenty seven years ago today, we welcomed Nick into our lives. He was the 'perfect' baby parents dream about.  Slept through the night right away, no fussing, allergies, or illness.  Just a happy, cheerful little soul.

Every parent has multiple parts of their character that make up who they are.  When they have children, a portion of some of those characteristics ironically show up in their children.  I am fortunate to have four children, each with a diverse part of me.  For the record, I am only speaking about the positive parts...anything negative I would have to surmise they got on their own...ha.

Nick is handsome, athletic, friendly, and like his Dad, an incurable romantic.  He wears his heart on his sleeve.  This morning he called me at 6am.  As he lives about 10 miles away and is prone to not being conscious til late morning (works the late shift at his job), I had to ask, "Where are you?"

Florida.

A young woman is currently holding that heart.  He took a few days off from work and flew out to see her.  He mentioned she is taking him to meet her parents.  I asked if he was nervous.  He answered, "No, parents always love me."

Tis true.  The relationships have not always worked out in the past, but the parents always loved him.

Good guy.  I hope this one works.

GRATITUDE - October 11, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR FINDING HUMOR IN PUBLIC COMMUNICATION.

Parents know what this means.
Do they really mean that?  Isn't there some kind of 2nd approval process necessary before they go to the sign maker?  I guess not.
Damn! Picnic spoiled.
Speedtrap?
I am not eating here
Don't Point at the Squirrels!

Job security.
Gov't taxing everything.  Good luck.
Damn...and so close to the volcano.

How dangerous is the non-safety ladder?
I have four.  Should I throw one back?

You tell me...
These guys are serious.
So true...
truth in advertising.
More truth in advertising

Thank God!
Stoned sign maker.
My personal favorite.  Picture worh a thousand words.

GRATITUDE - October 10, 2012

I AM, ONCE AGAIN, GRATEFUL FOR MY SIGHT.

Just got back from the ophthalmologist for my regular treatment for Galucoma.  Interesting note:  I have been going to the eye doctor[s] for about 50 years.  In the last 20 years I have had to switch to tri-focals to get it right; up close and far away.  Taking my standard 'read the third line please' eye test to check my general vision, for the first time, the tech said "Are you looking through the top part of your glasses?"  That is the section for distance.

Amazing.

So simple, but what a difference.  I had not realized it, nor had anyone said anything about it, but miraclously, I could read all the lines.

Funny.  Little things we take for granted.

So much beauty and cool things oin this planet to see.  The gift of sight is very special.

GRATITUDE - October 9, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR KNOWING CPR AND FOR HAVING A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR.

I appreciate public service announcements we all can use and the use of current movie trends as a medium.

CPR IN A MOST UNUSUAL WAY - VIDEO

Definitely puts this important message in a new light. Is undead better than dead?

GRATITUDE - October 8, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR MY WIFE.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Seventeen years and some days ago, I had the great fortune to meet Lise Loeffler.  I was a single Dad, unemployed and had less than zero dollars.  I moved into a four-plex in midtown Sacramento, downstairs unit on the left.  Lise lived in the upstairs unit on the right.

With three boys I had multiple challenges with keeping them in clean clothes.  The tiny complex had one washer and dryer for all the units.  I often forgot the clothes and sometimes comeback to find them piled on the ground by another frustrated tenant.  Soon I found them placed neatly on top of the dryer and I knew there was an angel in the complex.

Never good at opening lines, I would hear her coming down the stairs and watch out the front door peephole, until she got to the bottom landing, and then "coincidentally" pop-out to 'check my mail'.  Several lame inquires about my untility bill didn't scare her off.

Fast forward many years....I am truly a lucky man.

Today is her birthday...cursed with being forever young.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! SONG

much love
