GRATITUDE - June 7, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR ACCESS TO GATHERING INTERESTING TIDBITS OF INFORMATION (FLUFF OR OMEN?) AND ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY.

Such as: in 1989  - there was a moment, a very short one, where the recorded time was:

01:23:45 6-7-89

That would have been the moment to propose, put down the big bet, etc.   Interesting.

I am now wondering if the beginning of today's blog portends to be how I will use my retirement moments...ha.

I am hoping not, that there will be a greater return on my investment of golden time.

"Time is the coin of your life.  It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent.  Be careful, lest you let other people spend it for you."  - Carl Sandburg

Up early today - have a medical test  first thing.  A lot more serious things to be thankful for than time fluff.

Doppler echocardiography is a procedure which uses ultrasound technology to examine the heart and blood vessels.[1] An echocardiogram uses high frequency sound waves to create an image of the heart while the use of Doppler technology allows determination the speed and direction of blood flow by utilizing the Doppler effect.
An echocardiogram can, within certain limits, produce accurate assessment of the direction of blood flow and the velocity of blood and cardiac tissue at any arbitrary point using the Doppler effect. One of the limitations is that the ultrasound beam should be as parallel to the blood flow as possible. Velocity measurements allow assessment of cardiac valve areas and function, any abnormal communications between the left and right side of the heart, any leaking of blood through the valves (valvular regurgitation), calculation of the cardiac outputand calculation of E/A ratio[2] (a measure of diastolic dysfunction). Contrast-enhanced ultrasound using gas-filled microbubble contrast media can be used to improve velocity or other flow-related medical measurements.
Although "Doppler" has become synonymous with "velocity measurement" in medical imaging, in many cases it is not the frequency shift (Doppler shift) of the received signal that is measured, but the phase shift (when the received signal arrives).

GRATITUDE - June 6, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR BEING ECONOMICALLY SECURE.

I have friends that got"downsized" late in life and missed the opportunity to salt away extra money into a 401 K etc.  Their retirement options are fairly limited and working until 66 for full benefits (which may be mediocre at best) is their only option vs. luck in Reno and  winning the lottery.

I chose August 20 as my official start date of retirement...eleven days before my 65th birthday.

* If I had chosen the 31st I would have been eligible to make an extra $12,000 in wages without penalty between my 65th and 66th birthday....

...that is a downside if only I intended to work all next year...........NOT likely.

*I could have chosen July 20 as my retirement date and received my first retirement check for my birthday...

...that is a downside if I made good wages over $1200 for the month of August and would end up paying a 50% penalty.

etc.  etc.  A good and bad side to each decision.  That said, the first check will arrive 30 days after you retire and will always be one month behind.  If I am still here to cash it, I would be most grateful.

GRATITUDE - June 5, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR OMENS.

Omen: anything perceived or happening that is believed to portend a good or evil event or circumstance in the future.

Have mentioned many times about my desire to retire and have been debating about exactly when to pull the trigger.  I needed a certified copy of my birth certificate to complete the forms.  I sent off for it ages ago to public records in Oklahoma.

Yesterday's mail brought not only the birth certificate I have been waiting for but, also the latest updated copy of my social security payout form.  Omen.

Filling out the paperwork tonight.

GRATITUDE - June 4, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR SLOWLY GAINING INSIGHT AS TO MY POSITION AS DRIVER.

Love this little quote that reminds me that I am the source of my ups and downs and the amount of control I have to choose which bucket to be in.

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the one thing I can, and the wisdom to know it's me. “

GRATITUDE - June 3, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR MY GOOD FORTUNE IN FINDING A FABULOUS PARTNER IN LIFE.

Sixteen plus years and still excellent.  Just thinking (yet again) how great my life is and to whom I owe that to.  Lise.  If I would be still alive, I  would most certainly be living in a cardboard box down by the river, if not for her steady guidance.

Nice home, own our cars, comfortable retirement pending, financially secure, beautiful daughter, she is also my in-house doctor to remind me daily (at a minimum) regarding my health directives (I bought her a white lab coat so she could also look the part), attorney on long-term retainer, as well as financial adviser, to guard and guide my nickles.

Wow.  Gratitude is an understatement.

GRATITUDE - June 2, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE BACK WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY CANCER EXPERIENCE TO OTHERS FOLLOWING BEHIND.

...excerpts from email to wife (caregiver) of new member of my Tonsil Cancer 'club' on-line forum.  Her question to me was how to deal with peoples negative chatter from their social group and how to keep her husband's attitude positive.

"....as the guardian of attitude...please tell friends (?) etc. rather bluntly, that only positive, upbeat thoughts are allowed...I'm sure they mean well, but until you are in it - you don't get it...like childless people telling you how to be a parent.

Suggestion:

Have your husband carry his top ten positive affirmations, written down, with him and review every spare moment when doubts creep in.  Post-It -notes with cool upbeat thoughts on bathroom mirror, etc.  Sounds silly, but pretty soon the roses will crowd out the weeds.  Works really well for me...have a glass of wine and write down all the things you two have to be grateful for (get a legal pad - there is a lot).  Writing it down reinforces it and subliminally adds $$ to the positive-thought bank account.

Note:  If one averages the life expectancy of five 80-year old smoking alcoholics with tonsil cancer and the life expectancy of five 30-40 year old healthy tonsil victims...you will always get something less than 100%...forget the averages...he is in the right category.  He will be fine" .

"Fairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children that dragons can be killed." - G. K. Chesterton

When we choose not to focus on what is missing from our lives, but are grateful for the abundance that is present...we experience heaven on Earth." - Sarah Ban Breathnach

"Courage does not always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day, saying,"I will try again tomorrow." - Mary Anne Radmacher

"Go over, under, around, or through, but...never give up." – unknown

You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses.” – Ziggy

GRATITUDE - June 1, 2012

I AM GRATEFUL FOR REGAINING THE PLEASURABLE TASTE OF CHOCOLATE.

A few short years ago, I was treated with seven weeks of radiation to the head and neck area to deal with a diagnosis of tonsil cancer.  It did its job, thank God, but also took out my taste buds and saliva glands.  It took a couple of years for both of those oral sensations to return in a sense of normalcy...but chocolate tasted like moldy cardboard with the same kind of texture ( I imagine this only) long after the rest of the "normal" returned.

It has only been about less than a year that the "sweet" and "chocolate" buds have returned.  It is still not like back in the day (prior to 2008) when I could consume a full box of See's Candy (dark chocolate and nuts), but getting closer.

Enjoying chocolate is a minor little thing the world passes over daily, but is like the old adage "You don't know know the worth of the water, 'til the well goes dry".

Little pleasure - large step in recovery to  the "new normal".
